PETALING JAYA: The People’s Progressive Party (PPP) will cooperate with other Indian-based political parties to get Indian voters in the Teluk Intan constituency to come out and vote in the by-election on March 31.

Its president Datuk M. Kayveas said the PPP election machinery would be focusing on the Indian community in the India by-election campaign.

“We see that the majority of the Indian voters, numbering more than 11,000 in Teluk Intan, live in the estates.

“But usually in a general election or by-election, only around 40% of the Indian voters come out to cast their votes,” he said when opening a talk on Snatch Theft and Crime organised by Petaling Jaya Selatan PPP division, here, Sunday.

Barisan Nasional had announced Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong as its candidate for the parliamentary seat by-election, while DAP is fielding Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud, political secretary to DAP adviser Lim Kit Siang.

Kayveas believes that Mah will be able to draw voters' support as he had held the seat before for two terms and was once a deputy minister.

The Teluk Intan parliamentary seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Seah Leong Peng, 48, of the DAP on May 1.

Nomination day is on May 19, while early voting is on May 27 with polling set for May 31.

In the last general election, Seah defeated Barisan candidate Datuk Mah Siew Keong and independent Moralingam Kannan by a majority of 7,313 votes.
