TELUK INTAN: Police warned all supporters from Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Rakyat on Thursday to adhere the Election Offences Act 1954 to ensure a safe campaigning period.
Hilir Perak OCPD Asst Comm Goh Kok Liang said the police would not hesitate to take stern action against anyone who tried to cause disturbance during the two-week campaigning period for the Teluk Intan parliamentary seat by-election.
"Aside from ensuring a smooth by-election to be held, the police also hope the by-election will be conducted fairly.
"It is regrettable in the incident involving DAP's Dyana Sofya Mohd Daud that was disrupted at the RPA Padang Tembak," he told a press conference here on Thursday.
"The incident has been diffused with the presence of the police," he said.
A group of four youths had tried to chase away Dyana Sofya's campaigning group at the night market there on Wednesday at about 5.30pm.
On Dyana Sofya's statement that crime in Teluk Intan was serious, ACP Goh said it was untrue.
"What she said is confusing the people in the area. Such allegations are mere perception," he said.
"Everything in Teluk Intan is under control," he added.
ACP Goh said as of May this year, there have been 150 crime cases reported.
"The average is about a crime case daily.
"Hence, all voters should not be worried to come out, fulfil their duties, and cast their vote," he said.
ACP Goh stressed that there were sufficient manpower to ensure the by-election would be held smoothly and safely.
"We have Ops Cantas, the Motorcycle Patrolling Unit, mobile police vehicles and beat patrols 24 hours daily," he said.
"Candidates need to debate on safety issues in Teluk Intan and ensure they encourage more voters to come out and vote," he added.
Dyana Sofya will face against Gerakan president Datuk Mah Siew Keong in the May 31st by-election.
