Iranian MP Ahmad Tavakoli has expressed serious reservations about the Guardian Council’s disqualification of Minoo Khaleghi, the candidate who won the third-highest number of votes in Isfahan, and said the lack of transparency around this decision compromises the council’s credibility.

Tavakoli writes in his Telegram note that such an action is unprecedented and the public outrage is has triggered is only reasonable.

Minoo Khaleghi won the third-highest number of votes in Isfahan during the first round of parliamentary elections in February. Isfahan sends five representatives to Parliament.

Her votes were voided by the Guardian Council for unclear reasons after the vote count was announced by the election office.

Some unofficial reports say the disqualification has to do with her “noncompliance with Islamic codes of behaviour during trips abroad”. The council has not, however, confirmed the reason for the disqualification.

Tavakoli said the final option is to call on the Supreme Leader and the Dispute Resolution High Commission to resolve this matter.
