BAGDAD, 1 (Nov. Reuters / EP) -

The Government of Iraq plans to convene on May 15, 2018 the next legislative elections, from which could come a new prime minister, as reported late on Tuesday the Iraqi government headquarters.

The current prime minister, Haider al Abadi, has not yet revealed whether he will seek reelection in office. Prime Minister accumulates most executive powers in Iraq, including the head of the Armed Forces.

The date of May 15, agreed at a government meeting on Tuesday, still must be approved by Parliament. Al Abadi came to power in 2014 after the departure of Nuri al-Maliki, a close ally of Iran and was considered the main responsible for the fall of the army against the advance of the terrorist group Islamic State, which managed to seize a third of the territory of country.

Al Abadi has been praised for having succeeded in rebuilding the armed forces and defeat Islamic State in its main stronghold, the city of Mosul in July 2017 with the support of the US-led coalition.

Al Maliki holds the ceremonial post of vice president of the country. As leader of the Shiite Dawa party and the largest bloc in parliament, Al Maliki remains an important political figure. The prime minister is reserved for Shiites, as part of a power-sharing system established after the US military invasion that ended Saddam Hussein.

The Presidency of the country, with more symbolic than real weight, corresponds to a Kurdish member of parliament while the Presidency of the Parliament needs to be exercised by a Sunni parliamentarian.
