US ready for ‘Good agreement’ with Taliban: Khalilzad

The US Special Representative for Afghanistan’s Reconciliation, Zalmay Khalilzad, who has arrived in Doha for another round of talks with the Taliban, said on Saturday that the United States is ready for “a good agreement” with the Taliban.

Khalilzad said in a tweet that the “Taliban are signaling they would like to conclude an agreement” but he reiterated that the US is pursuing a peace agreement, not a withdrawal agreement. A peace agreement that enables withdrawal, he added.  

IEC Allocates $30M For Purchasing Biometric Devices

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Tuesday announced the allocation of $30 million for purchasing biometric identification devices ahead of the September presidential elections.

The head of the IEC secretariate, Habib-Ur-Rahman Nang said the election commission has finalized $150 million as the budget for the elections and that it has been shared with the Ministry of Finance.

Nang made the statement during a ceremony that marked the official launch of distribution of certificates and identity cards to the election observers.

A group of election observers and representatives of Afghanistan’s mainstream political parties on Thursday held a public debate with members of the Independent Election Commission, or the IEC, on issues around the upcoming presidential polls.

The attendants of the “national conference on elections” criticized the IEC for not having a proper plan for moving forward the electoral process.

Many of the critics at the event claimed that the IEC is making deliberate attempts to prevent a transparent election.

President Ghani prays for peace in Masjid Al-Nabavi

Kabul (BNA) Before his return to Kabul, the President of the Islamic Republic of Afghanistan, Mohammad Ashraf Ghani visited Masjid Al-Nabavi and prayed for the restoration of peace, security and welfare of the country, a statement said from the Presidential Palace the other day.

The president and his led delegation prayed for the end of war and restoration of peace in the country, with the Imam of Masjid Al-Nabavi offering him a holy Quran as gift there, said the presidential palace in the statement.
 

Afghan opposition threatens protests over presidential term

A coalition of candidates in this year’s Afghan presidential election has said it will lead protests countrywide for President Ashraf Ghani to step down after what it says is the end of his constitutional term.

The presidential palace has countered that the demand violates the law. A presidential spokesman said the country’s Supreme Court has already allowed Ghani to remain in office until after the election, which is scheduled for September.

Supreme court extends president Ghani’s tenure

The Supreme Court of Afghanistan has approved the extension of President Ashraf Ghani’s tenure until the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for September 28. 

Based on the Constitution, Ghani’s tenure ends on May 22. 
 
“In line with the provision of the law and with the consideration of the situation of the country and based on the jurisprudential rules, the tenure of the president and his deputies is endorsed until the presidential elections,” the Supreme Court said in a directive.  

IEC expedites efforts for presidential elections

Officials from the Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Saturday said they have made some developments in the preparations for the upcoming presidential elections as they have accelerated their efforts for the polls as well as for the provincial councils elections and Ghazni parliamentary elections – all scheduled for September 28. 

Presidential elections will cost $207 million: IEC

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) has finalized the "operational plan" for the upcoming presidential elections which shows that the polls will cost $207 million, a spokesman of the electoral body said. However, the commission earlier predicted that the elections will need $192 million.

The Ghazni parliamentary elections, as well as the provincial councils' elections, will be held on the same day with the presidential polls scheduled for September 28.
