Qatar attendance at Saudi summit raises prospect of detente

A possible US-backed thaw in Qatari-Saudi relations has been signalled by Qatari diplomats travelling to Saudi Arabia to lay the ground for their country’s attendance at a major summit in Mecca on alleged Iranian aggression in the region.
 
Qatar’s attendance will be seen as the biggest rapprochement between the two countries since the Saudis launched a sweeping economic and political blockade against the gas-rich country two years ago, accusing Doha of trying to undermine Saudi Arabia, fund terrorism and promote the Muslim Brotherhood across the Middle East.

The United Nations confirmed that a Saudi-led airstrike on Friday killed 12 civilians, including seven children, in the southern city of Taiz. The U.N. said that at least 27 children in Yemen have been killed or injured over a period of 10 days. Friday’s attack came as Trump announced he was declaring a national emergency to push through $7 billion worth of U.S. weapons sales to Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates. The declaration allows Trump to circumvent Congress, which has used the War Powers Resolution to oppose military support for the war in Yemen.

New law qualitative leap in service of foreign Haj pilgrims: Benten

The Council of Ministers on Tuesday approved the Law for the Service Providers of Foreign Haj Pilgrims. The Council endorsed the law after examining an earlier decision of the Shoura Council and recommendation of the Council of Economic and Development Affairs (CEDA). There is a provision in the law for the institutional restructuring of the tawafa organizations so as to transform them into closed joint stock companies.

Qatar’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson, Lolwah Al-Khater, has hit back and commented by Saudi Arabia’s Minister of State for Foreign Affairs, Adel Al-Jubeir.
 
Al-Khater told Al Jazeera TV channel, Monday: Al-Jubeir’s statements are paradoxes. He started talking about the need for Arab unification … and then started attacking Qatar.
 
She wondered, “How can these two standpoints go together? He called for unity and then attacks a brotherly Arab country!”. Al-Jubeir claimed that Qatar has been a harming the GCC since 1995.

Dr. Tamader bint Youssef Al Rammah has been appointed deputy minister of labour and social development.  Saudi Arabia has replaced some of its top military officers in a shake-up that elevates a younger generation, brings a woman into a senior government job.

In a reshuffle announced late on Monday, the military chief of staff, air defence and land forces heads and senior defence and interior ministry officials were removed. Tamadur bint Youssef Al Ramah became deputy labour minister, a rare high-level job for a woman in the kingdom.

Saudi Arabia on Thursday slammed US President Donald Trump's decision to recognise Jerusalem as Israel's capital, calling the move “unjustified and irresponsible”.

Trump ended seven decades of US ambiguity on the status of the disputed city on Wednesday, prompting an almost universal diplomatic backlash and fears of new bloodshed in the Middle East.

He also kicked off the process of moving the US embassy from Tel Aviv to Jerusalem.

Manama: Saudi Arabia has clipped the prerogatives of the powerful Commission for the Promotion of Virtue and Prevention of Vice, the religious police, and banned it from chasing, arresting or asking for the identity papers of anyone.

Under a new structure and set of regulations endorsed by the cabinet at its weekly meeting, the commission will not move into action and will report suspicious cases to the police or the anti-drugs squads who will be fully in charge of all the measures that include chasing, arresting, detaining and questioning suspects.
