Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party strips Nasser al-Qudwa of membership after he announced his own list of candidates in upcoming polls.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas’s Fatah party has expelled one of its senior officials over his attempt to field a separate list of candidates in a parliamentary election.

 

In a statement on Thursday, Fatah’s Central Committee said it had given Nasser al-Qudwa two days to reverse his decision and drop his breakaway challenge, but that he had failed to comply.

RAMALLAH, Feb. 28 (Xinhua) -- Fatah, a major faction in Palestine, has agreed to ally with other five factions to run in the upcoming general elections, according to a Fatah official on Sunday.

"Five factions have officially informed us that they are ready to ally with Fatah to contest in the elections in a unified list," Azzam al-Ahmad, a member of the Fatah Central Committee, told reporters in the West Bank city of Ramallah.

RAMALLAH, Feb. 16 (Xinhua) -- The Palestinian Central Elections Commission (PCEC) announced on Tuesday that 2.57 million voters have already been registered for the upcoming general elections in the West Bank and the Gaza Strip.

The PCEC said in a statement sent to Xinhua that the registration of voters in the Palestinian territories is scheduled to end at midnight on Tuesday.

The Palestinian citizens in East Jerusalem, who hold Israeli identity cards, will participate in the general elections without being registered in the PCEC's voter registry, it noted.

Palestinian factions are planning to draft a “code of conduct” to guarantee the holding of free and transparent elections during their talks in Cairo this month.

Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas issued a decree last month to hold legislative elections on May 22 and presidential polls on July 31, for the first time in 15 years.

Ahead of the vote, Palestinian factions are set to meet in the Egyptian capital Cairo later this month for discussions on ways of rendering the elections successfully.

According to decrees issued by the presidential office on Friday, the Palestinian Authority, which has limited self-rule in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, will hold legislative elections on May 22 and a presidential vote on July 31.

At least seven Palestinians were injured by live bullets today, including a child, when Israeli forces attacked hundreds of protesters taking part in the weekly Great March of Return at the east border of the Gaza Strip, according to medical sources.
 
Stationed at borderline watchtowers and in armored military vehicles, Israeli soldiers fired live bullets and rubber-coated steel rounds at the protesters who gathered at many locations along the border, injuring seven of them.

Do all Palestinians have the right to citizenship in whatever state rules historic Palestine? After all, they or their recent ancestors were bonafide citizens of British-Mandate Palestine. Doesn’t the right of return to their homes now in the state of Israel entail the right of re-enfranchisement? Could citizenship now be declared for all Palestinians in a state claiming legitimate sovereignty over all of historic Palestine? New 18th Palestinian government sworn-in

In a first, Palestinian leadership submits referral to International Criminal Court to investigate 'Israeli crimes'.

For the first time, the Palestinian government has submitted a referral to the International Criminal Court (ICC) calling on prosecutors to open an immediate investigation into what it called Israeli crimes in the occupied Palestinian territories. 

Palestinian Authority Foreign Minister Riyad al-Malki arrived on Tuesday at the independent court, based in The Hague, Netherlands, to meet with Prosecutor Fatou Bensouda.

Israeli troops shot dead dozens of Palestinian protesters on the Gaza border on Monday as the United States opened its embassy to Israel in Jerusalem, a move that has fueled Palestinian anger and drawn foreign criticism that it undermines peace efforts.

It was the bloodiest single day for Palestinians since the Gaza conflict in 2014. Palestinian Health Ministry officials said 55 protesters were killed and 2,700 injured either by live gunfire, tear gas or other means.

The Arab League has called on the United States to revoke its recent decision to recognize Jerusalem as the capital of Israel, warning that such a decision was a "provocation to Muslims and Christians" in the region.

In a statement in the early hours of Sunday following an emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers, the league said it rejected the decision, which was officially announced by US President Donald Trump on Wednesday, describing the move as “void and a dangerous violation of international law, Security Council resolutions, and the UNGA.”

Palestinian factions led by Fatah and Hamas have agreed to hold general elections no later than at the end of 2018, as part of the latest round of reconciliation talks held in Cairo.

In a statement released after the conclusion of the talks on Wednesday, representatives of the factions urged the Central Election Commission to complete preparations for the presidential and legislative elections by the end of next year.

CAIRO (Ma’an) -- The Hamas and Fatah movements signed a long-awaited reconciliation deal on Thursday in the Egyptian capital of Cairo after weeks of anticipation, though the exact details of the agreement have remained elusive.

 The announcement came after the Fatah-led Palestinian Authority (PA), which controls the occupied West Bank, and Hamas, which up until earlier this month served as the de facto authority in the besieged Gaza Strip, convened in Cairo on Tuesday for the talks.
