Kyrgyzstan appointed Ulukbek Maripov as the country’s new prime minister Wednesday, bringing a long-running political crisis to a close. 

A new government was formed after Sadyr Japarov, who won presidential elections held on Jan. 10, resigned as prime minister.

Party leaders who formed a coalition nominated Maripov for the premiership. He was then serving as chairman of the Accounting Chamber, a state auditing institution.

Maripov won a vote of confidence in the polls, which were held to determine the new prime minister and cabinet members.

As many as 17 candidates are in the fray in the presidential elections in the Central Asian country of Kyrgyzstan, scheduled on Sunday.

A referendum is also scheduled on the same day to determine the form of government alongside choosing the president.

Kyrgyzstan, which gained its independence on Aug.31, 1991 after the collapse of the Soviet Union, will witness the eighth elections in its political history.

As many as 3.5 million registered voters will cast their votes in 2,474 ballot boxes put up in the country and 48 ballot boxes outside the country.

Canadian company Centerra Gold Inc. announced results of elections of its Board of Directors. There are 3 representatives of Kyrgyzstan among 11 people.

Dushen Kasenov and Maksat Kobonbaev became new members of the Board of Directors from Kyrgyzstan. In addition, Askar Oskombaev remained in the Board of Directors.

Two candidates run for post of mayor of Balykchy town

Two candidates submitted documents to the Territorial Election Commission to participate in the elections for the post of head of Balykchy town. Press service of the Central Election Commission of Kyrgyzstan reported.

A 26-year-old Marat Kudaibergenov from Zamandash faction and 40-year-old Mirbek Shakirov from Kyrgyzstan faction run for the post.

Today the parliament considered the draft law on presidential elections and sent it to the vote.

Under the bill, the next presidential election is held on the third Sunday in October, in which the term of office of the president expires, to which he was elected. Elections are appointed by the parliament not later than 4 months before the election day.

The Speaker of the Kyrgyz Parliament invited Azerbaijan to participate in the observation mission in the presidential elections, which will be held in the country in the fall of 2017. Chynybay Tursunbekov said it at a meeting with the Chairman of Milli Majlis of the Republic of Azerbaijan Oktay Asadov in Istanbul (Turkey).
