KABUL (Pajhwok): The second vice-president on Thursday said the government was committed to holding parliamentary and district council elections next year based on reforms to be applied.

Sarwar Danish in a message to a gathering in Kabul said the country would face widespread problems if the elections were not held next year.

The gathering was arranged by the Afghan Civil Society Election Network (ACSEN) about electoral reforms.

Timor Hakimyar, a member of ACSEN’s leadership board, called electoral reforms as vital for transparent future elections.

MHP names members for charter panel with hopes of strengthening parliamentary system

The Nationalist Movement Party (MHP) has named three lawmakers to represent the party in a parliamentary commission to be tasked with drafting a new constitution, with party leader Devlet Bahçeli underlining their aspirations of strengthening the current parliamentary system.

But Parliamentary Speaker İsmail Kahraman voiced his support for a transition from the current parliamentary system to a presidential system.

The leader of the Kurdish-problem-focused Peoples’ Democratic Party (HDP) has said the party had no support from media organizations during the run-up periods of both June and November 2015 parliamentary elections, daily Hürriyet has reported.

“We never got positive support from any media organizations on June 7 nor Nov. 1, including the Doğan Media Group. There was not any agreement and relationship built upon mutual interest,” said HDP co-chair Selahattin Demirtaş on Jan. 10, speaking at his party’s city conference at a wedding hall in Istanbul’s Çağlayan neighborhood.

The Lebanese Forces has informed the March 14 alliance that the LF would back Change and Reform bloc leader MP Michel Aoun for the presidency, An Nahar daily reported on Monday.

The newspaper said that LF lawmaker George Adwan made the announcement on his party's serious intention to back Aoun during a meeting that was held by the coalition’s leaders on Sunday night.

Adwan urged them “to deal with this option calmly,” it said.

KABUL (Pajhwok): The Coordination Council of Political and Jihadi parties on Sunday said the government should announce the schedule for parliamentary and district council elections before bringing electoral reforms.

Pir Syed Ahmad Gilani, the council spokesman, told Pajhwok Afghan News during an exclusive chat the announcement of dates for the elections was more important than changes to the election commissions.

Gilani favoured holding elections first calling it principle of democracy, saying reforms could be introduced in the next stage.

ECP summons PB-50 candidates in Islamabad

QUETTA: The Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) has summoned all the four candidates who contested the by-election on a Balochistan Assembly constituency (PB-50 Turbat-3) to Islamabad on Jan 11.

Provincial Election Com­mis­sioner in Balochistan Syed Sultan Bayazid said here on Thursday that the ECP had also summoned the district returning officer and returning officer.

Turkish Parliament Speaker İsmail Kahraman said on Jan. 8 he would head the conciliation commission and send letters to party leaders, foreseeing that a new constitution would likely be issued.

“I will head the conciliation commission and the commission will determine its working principles itself. I think that a new constitution will be issued,” said Kahraman during a press conference, adding he would send letters to the leaders of all four parties in the Turkish parliament.

The 34th session to elect a president has been postponed on Thursday due to the lack of quorum at parliament.

Speaker Nabih Berri scheduled a new electoral session for February 8.

MP Marwan Hamadeh said after failed elections: “The number of lawmakers present at the failed session reflects the pessimism over the possibility to elect a head of state.”

TOBA TEK SINGH: According to unofficial results of 147 polling stations, PML-N’s Pir Ali Baba won by-poll for PP-89 by a margin of 20825 votes.

He secured 55894 votes while independent candidate Sonia Ali Raza got 35,609 votes. The turnout was 56 per cent.

Mr Baba (whose actual name is Qutab Ali Shah), is the son of former MPA Pir Ibrar Husain and nephew of former prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani.

Runner-up Ms Raza is daughter of late MPA Makhdoom Ali Raza and niece of former Punjab minister Makhdoom Mukhtar Hussain.

The head of the Independent Election Commission (IEC), Yusuf Nuristani, on Wednesday welcomed MPs decision to reject President Ashraf Ghani's legislative decrees on the amendment of electoral laws, and said the Electoral Commissions Selection Committee's activities are not legal.

"The Selection Committee has been established based on a political agreement. We believe that the Wolesi Jirga [Lower House of Parliament] has paid respect to the country's law [by rejecting the decrees]," Nuristani said at a press conference.

The ruling Justice and Development Party (AKP) and two other opposition parties have reached a consensus on a number of key issues necessary to produce a new constitution and now parliament is responsible for moving the process forward, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu stated on Dec. 6.

“I think six months will be enough [to write a new constitution] when the current acquis on the matter is also considered,” Davutoğlu told press members.
