Draft Revision of Constitution Widely Taken Up By National Press

Farouk Ksentini and Rekhila Ameur affirmed Thursday that the draft revision of the Constitution enshrines the principles of democracy and the foundations of a new political, social and cultural life.

In a statement to APS, the chairman of the National Consultative Commission for Human Rights Protection and Promotion (CNCPPDH) Farouk Ksentini underlined that "with its political, social and cultural three-dimensional structure, the draft revised Constitution proposed a modern constitution which enshrines a new political life."

Sudan Opposition Leader Accepts Talks With Government

A Sudan opposition leader said her party will honor an African Union invitation to hold talks in Ethiopia with Sudanese President Omar al-Bashir’s government to discuss a national dialogue intended to resolve the country’s problems. 

A national dialogue launched last year by President Bashir is currently being held in Sudan. 

Mariam al-Mahdi, daughter of opposition leader Sadig al-Mahdi and vice president of the Umma party has been critical of the current dialogue because it is being held in what she calls, "an unfriendly environment." 

Sharjah approves candidates list for milestone council poll

SHARJAH// Two hundred candidates have been approved to stand for the 21 seats on the Sharjah Consultative Council.

On Sunday, the Sharjah Election Committee announced the initial list of approved candidates for the first local election in the history of the country.

The list includes 43 women.

In Sharjah city, 96 applications, including 25 women, were approved to compete for six seats.

The eastern region has had the second-highest number of candidates, with 30 competing in Khor Fakkan and 23 in Kalba for three seats in each district.

Selection Committee Set To Receive Nominations From Sunday

The Election Commission Selection Committee said Saturday it will receive nomination papers of election commission members from Sunday.

They said it will take ten days for nominations to be handed in and as soon as the deadline has passed they will start studying nominations.

Meanwhile, members of the selection committee said they are still trying to finalize some issues.

The selection committee convened its first meeting on Saturday to discuss the nomination process of candidates for electoral commissions.

Tehran, Jan 1, IRNA – Provisional Friday Prayers Imam of Tehran Hojjatoleslam Kazzem Seddiqi referring to two major elections ahead in months said here on Friday that full alertness and piety are needed for voting in February Parliamentary and Leadership Experts Assembly elections.

‘We need to elect representatives in those two elections to be considerate, to safeguard the martyr’s blood, to be farsighted, to safeguard the national security, to be the best possible and fittest for the purpose, and not to put Iran’s national security at stake,’ he said.

Turkish president proposes ‘conference call’ with stakeholders for new constitution

Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, in a quest to find new ways to create a new constitution, has proposed “conference calls” with as many people as possible to provide a strong ground for “societal agreement.”

Speaking at a press conference after his Istanbul arrival from an official visit to Saudi Arabia late Dec. 31, Erdoğan was asked to elaborate on his earlier remarks concerning “conference calls.”

Selection Committee Holds First Session, Appoints Chairman

The Election Commission's Selection Committee – which is tasked to start with the electoral system reform process - held its first session on Thursday and appointed a chairman.

In this session, two members of the committee – Din Mohammad Geran, member of the Supreme Court and Mohammad Naeem Ayubzada, head of Free and Fair Election of Afghanistan – were nominated for chairmanship of the committee.

But the seven-member selection committee elected Geran as their chairman.

HoR session to approve GNA postponed due to lack of quorum

The House of Representatives (HoR) was forced to postpone its session today due to the lack of a quorum.

Today’s session was called by the majority group in the hope of voting in support of the UN-brokered Libyan Political Agreement (LPA) signed in the Moroccan city of Skhirat on 17th December. The LPA is to lead to the formation of a Government of National Accord (GNA) to be led by Prime Minister-designate Faiez Al-Serraj.

Number of applicants for Iran parliament seats surpasses 10,000

TEHRAN (Tasnim) – More than ten thousand Iranians have registered as of Friday noon to run for a seat in the parliament in elections slated for late February, an official announced.

Interior Ministry Spokesperson Hossein Ali Amiri said on Friday that 10,004 persons have registered to run in the parliamentary elections, 960 of whom are women.

Earlier in the day, Interior Minister Abdolreza Rahmani Fazli had announced that the number of female applicants have risen by 3 percent compared to the previous term.

Jannati: Guardian Council to observe freedom in elections

Tehran, Dec 25, IRNA – Tehran’s Friday Prayers substitute Leader Ayatollah Ahmad Jannati said that Guardian Council will observe law, tranquility and freedom in the upcoming elections.

Referring to the Majlis (parliament) and Assembly of Experts elections, the ayatollah said in his second sermon here on Friday that election is honor of Islam, Muslim and the regime, so it should be held widely, securely and differences should not have any affect on election.

KABUL (Pajhwok): Election observers say they are concerned about the rejection of a presidential decree on the Electoral Reform Commission’s suggestions by the Wolesi Jirga, asking the government to find any other viable solution to the complex situation.
