LAHORE: Lack of a vigorous campaign unlike the one for NA-122, no criteria for selection of candidates, politics of confrontation and infighting are among the factors that led to the debacle of Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf (PTI) in the first phase of local body elections in the city on Oct 31, reveal background interviews with party leaders.

Leaders, both provincial and local, admitted the PTI could not run an effective campaign as it had for the by-election in NA-122.

Muscat: Khalid bin Hilal Al Mawali has been reelected as the chairman of Majlis Al Shura for the period from 2015 to 2019.

Al Mawali who is a representative of Wadi Al Maawil won against five members. He got 59 votes out of 84 total votes.

The candidates were Saleh Al Kithairy of Thumrait, Mohammed Al Busaidi of Bausher, Ahmed Al Haddabi of Bidbid and Mohammed Al Kindi of Nakhal. Two candidates withdrew before voting started.

The Lebanese Forces and Free Patriotic Movement have reiterated their commitment to addressing the parliamentary electoral law above any other article at the upcoming legislative session, reported An Nahar daily on Wednesday.

Sources from the LF told the daily that the two sides will adhere to their “rejection to attend any session that does not have the electoral law on its agenda.”

The Justice and Development Party (AKP), which has returned to power as a single-party government just five months after losing its majority in June, has drafted a timeline for its next steps - taking the upcoming G20 summit in southern Turkey into consideration.

Accordingly, members of new parliament will take their oath on Nov. 17, after the Supreme Election Board (YSK) announces the final official results of the Nov. 1 snap election on Nov. 12. Deputies will be therefore be taking their oaths after Turkey hosts the G20 leaders’ meeting in Antalya on Nov. 15-16.

LAHORE: The Election Commission of Pakistan should declare the local government elections in the province null and void, Ejaz Chaudhry, political adviser to Pakistan Tehreek-i-Insaf chief Imran Khan, said at a press conference on Monday.

He said the party’s performance could not be attributed to selection of candidates. He said poor selection might have been responsible for defeat in only a few constituencies. The use of state machinery by the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz was responsible for the PTI’s poor performance in the elections, he said.

The outcome of Turkey’s general election on Nov. 1, which saw the Justice and Development Party (AKP) regain its parliamentary majority, follows a period of heightened political uncertainty that will not necessarily come to an end, international credit rating company Fitch Ratings has stated.

The White House on Nov 2 voiced displeasure at the "intimidation" of Turkish journalists during an election that bolstered the Justice and Development Party (AKP).
