Turkey's Prime Minister calls on opposition parties to bury the hatchet and discuss coalition

Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu has urged opposition parties to unclench their fists and turn swords into ploughshares if they want to form a coalition with the Justice and Development Party (AKP). 

 

Gathered with the newly elected deputies of his party, Davutoğlu called on other political parties, which have intentions of forming a coalition government, to have discussions with the AKP.

 

“Let’s talk [about the] future of the country. We can’t get to the field with fists,” he said on June 16.

 

Ousted president Morsi jailed for life in espionage case

Former Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi was sentenced to life in prison on Tuesday, in a case related to charges of spying for Hamas.

The court also sentenced 17 defendants to life in prison, and 16 to death, including Muslim Brotherhood leaders Khairat El-Shater and Mohamed El-Beltagy.

According to Egypt's penal code, life sentences are 25 years.

In the espionage case, prosecutors charged Morsi and 35 other defendants with conspiring with foreign powers - including Hamas, Lebanon's Hezbollah and Iran's Revolutionary Guards - to destabilise Egypt.

Shafiq party rejects his resignation

The Egyptian Patriotic Movement has rejected the resignation of its leader Ahmed Shafiq, Al-Ahram Arabic news website reported.

 

The movement’s supreme council said it would form a committee to travel to Abu Dhabi, where the Mubarak-era prime minister has lived  for “security reasons”  since he lost the presidency to Mohamed Morsi in 2012, to convince him to remain with the party.

The council said in a statement that they see Shafiq as a "principle," not a person, and that he is a true symbol of the party and will remain its head “forever.”

Egypt govt committee issues constituencies decision

A government committee has agreed to reduce the number of parliamentary constituencies to 205 from 206, in line with the view of the State Council, Transitional Justice Minister Ibrahim El-Heneidy has said.

 

The decision was agreed by the committee and the legislation department at the State Council.

El-Heneidy, who heads the committee responsible for amending the election laws, said he would notify the cabinet about the legislation department's approval of the amendments.

Electoral Reform Commission Decision to Be Announced Next Week

President Ashraf Ghani's legal advisor Abdul Ali Mohammadi on Tuesday said that an announcement regarding the special electoral reform commission will be made next week after all stakeholder comments have been heard.

 

"Next week the special electoral reform commission will be announced," Mohammadi said.

 

However, the cultural advisor to the executive director, Sayed Fazil Aqa Sancharaki, said that there are certain circles within the presidential palace and the CEO's office that are preventing government reforms from taking place.

Several MPs, on Tuesday, emphasised the need to strengthen the legislative role of the parliament and its control during the coming period in the national effort to fight against terrorism and facilitate the action of security institutions and the army. 

"The fight against terrorism is a shared responsibility between state institutions and all the components of society," members of the House of People's Representatives (HPR) argued at a press conference held by the Committee of Administrative Affairs and Security Forces and the Committee of Security and Defence at the HPR.

The prosecutor’s office has demanded the removal of 2,800 names from the electoral roll in Durres after an investigation revealed that the mayor had added thousands of non-resident voters to the list, based on falsified on rent contracts with a company owned by the municipality.

The opposition Democratic Party filed a complaint with the CEC, which in turn asked the prosecutor’s office to investigate accusations of fraud.

Sudan’s Bashir leaves South Africa as local court orders his arrest pending transfer to ICC

The Sudanese president Omer Hassan al-Bashir left South Africa few hours before judges at the High Court handed down a decision ordering his arrest and rapping the government for what it described as a violation of the constitution.

"The respondents are forthwith compelled to take all reasonable steps to arrest President Bashir ... and detain him pending a formal request for his surrender from the International Criminal Court," presiding Judge Dunstan Mlambo was quoted as saying by local South African media.

The Sudanese president Omer al-Bashir has been received by senior government officials and hundreds of supporters upon his return from South Africa on Monday evening where he participated in the 25th African Union summit.

Bashir left South Africa few hours before judges at the High Court handed down a decision ordering his arrest.

He arrived in Pertoria Saturday, defying two arrest warrants issued by the International Criminal Court (ICC) against him for war crimes and genocide in Darfur region in March 2009 and July 2010.

Journalists' Syndicate rejects 'attacks on freedoms' by Egypt's authorities

Egypt's Journalists' Syndicate board said on Monday it rejects what it described as "a continuous attack on the freedom of the press" by the government.

 

The board also added that such attacks were apparent in recent complaints by the Ministry of Interior against journalists who published articles that were critical of the government.
