Afghan Officials Confident On Security For Elections

Afghan security officials are assuring the public that nearly all the country's polling stations will be safe during April's presidential and provincial elections. 

Interior Ministry spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said on January 11 that a security assessment done for the upcoming elections showed that safety can be "guaranteed" at 6,431 of Afghanistan's 6,845 polling stations.

Sediqqi said the efforts are already under way to ensure safety at the remaining 414 polling stations.

The newly elected Puntland Parliament speaker Saed Hassan Shire has taken oath of office with the incoming Puntland president Abdiweli Mohamed Ali Gaas and Vice President Abdihakin Abdullahi Haji Omar, traditional leaders and civil society representative present on Monday, Garowe Online reports.

Former Parliament Speaker Abdirashid Mohamed Hirsi officially handed over the post to Shire who served as livestock and animal husbandry minister in the outgoing President, Abdirahman Mohamed Farole's government.

Law Makers Warn the Prime Minister Renaming Former Ministers

 Somali federal parliamentarians have warned the newly appointed Prime Minister Dr. Abdiwali Sheikh not to include former ministers who were among the failed cabinet in his plans to name his own new cabinet.

"Some of the former cabinet members told us that they can no longer hold the responsibility anymore and proposed the motion against the former premier (Shirdon), why are they coming back to us and asking us for posts?" said Mp's in a joint voice.

93 Percent of Polling Centers will be open during the Election Day: MOI

According to the Ministry of Interior About 93 percent of polling centers are expected to be open for business during Election Day.

"Out of 6,831 polling centers, 6,431 will be open and the Afghan forces will oversee security responsibilities," MoI spokesman Sediq Sediqqi said. "Unfortunately, 414 polling centers will not be open."

Afghan defense ministry spokesman, Gen. Zahir Azimi said, the Afghan army officers were summoned to capital Kabul to discuss steps in providing security for the upcoming elections.

In an apparent U-turn, Endri Fuga, an adviser to Albanian Prime Minister Edi Rama, told Balkan Insight that online publication of government decisions in full had re-started on Wednesday.

“Since the first government meeting of 2014, the decisions of the Council of Minister have been published in full,” Fuga maintained.

The Albanian government had been publishing the decisions of the Council of Ministers on its website since 2003.

Tunisia PM Ali Larayedh hands over power to Mehdi Jomaa

Tunisia's Islamist Prime Minister Ali Larayedh has resigned, fulfilling a pledge taken last year to help end the country's political deadlock.

The political crisis was brought about by the assassination of secular politician Mohamed Brahimi in July.

He will be replaced by Industry Minister Mehdi Jomaa, who will head a non-partisan, caretaker government.

Handing in his resignation, Mr Larayedh said: "I hope the country will be a model for democratic transition."

Mubarak PM considers bid for Egypt presidency

Hosni Mubarak's last prime minister, Ahmed Shafik, has said he will run for president if the Egyptian army chief does not contest elections.

"I believe now I will run for the presidency," Shafik told a Cairo television station on Thursday, adding that he would compete if army chief General Abdel Fattah al-Sisi stayed out of a race that is expected later this year.

Road map for Darfur security arrangements ready to be implemented: DRA

The Sudanese presidency and the Darfur Regional Authority (DRA) have agreed on the road map and schedules for the implementation of the security arrangements as stipulated in the Doha document for Peace in Darfur (DDPD).

The two parties decided to start with the practical implementation of the security arrangements immediately upon securing the necessary funds. On Tuesday, First Vice-President Bakri Hassan Saleh and the head of the DRA, Dr Tijani Sese, discussed the obstacles facing the implementation of the DDPD.

HERAT CITY (PAN): Female provincial council candidates on Tuesday said they could not travel to districts fearing attacks on them if they plunged into electioneering in western Herat province.

They said women were often attacked in Herat City by militants and unknown gunmen, accusing police of releasing individuals after their arrests on charges of insurgent activities.

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) is not opposed to postpone the general elections of 2015, said the party’s spokesperson who called on the position parties to participate in the electoral process.

The head of NCP organisational sector, Hamid Sideeq made his remarks on Tuesday reacting to the statements by opposition parties threatening to boycott the next election as they demand a comprehensive conference to discuss regional conflicts and democratic reforms.
