Concrete steps should be taken by the government through legislative and judicial arrangements in order to prevent failure in the stalled peace process, a senior executive of the main opposition Republican People’s Party (CHP) has said.
KUALA BESUT, July 17 (Bernama) -- A win in the Kuala Besut state seat by-election on July 24 is crucial for development programmes planned by the government in the area to be implemented in the best possible manner.
Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal said the federal government could easily channel aid to the area if the state government was from the same party as the central government.
"This factor must be taken into account by voters," he told reporters after visiting Kampung Nangka and Kampung Lampu, here, Wednesday.
BEIRUT: The Amal Movement and Hezbollah will negotiate the share of the Marada Movement in the next government, Suleiman Franjieh, the head of the Christian political party, said Thursday.
“Hezbollah and Amal are negotiating on behalf of me in consultation with the prime minister-designate because they have discussed the issue with me,” Franjieh told Hezbollah-affiliated Al-Nour radio.
The transitional period that includes constitutional amendments, parliamentary elections and ends with presidential elections is expected to finish within nine months, said Mostafa Higazy, presidential advisor for political affairs.

AMMAN — The higher coordinating committee for opposition parties on Tuesday said its members have not agreed on their position towards the upcoming municipal elections, slated for August 27.
In a statement, the committee noted that it will wait before declaring its formal position on participation in the elections pending the Constitutional Court’s decision on an appeal contesting the Municipalities Law’s constitutionality filed by 80 deputies earlier this week.
The Council of Ministers yesterday agreed to allow a team of international monitors to observe the July 27 elections in cooperation with Kuwait Transparency Society. Leader of the Islamic Revolution Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei has reappointed three Islamic jurist members of Iran’s Guardian Council and appointed a new jurist to the legislative and electoral supervisory body. In a decree issued on Tuesday, the Leader cited article 91 of the Iranian Constitution to reappoint Islamic jurist members Ayatollah Mohammad Mo’men, Ayatollah Mohammad Yazdi and Ayatollah Seyyed Mahmoud Hashemi Shahroudi to another six-year term in the supervisory body.

ISLAMABAD: Presidential elections have been scheduled for August 6 by the Election Commission of Pakistan (ECP) and a letter was sent to the Chief Election Commissioner Fakhrudin G Ibrahim in this regard, sources told Express News on Tuesday.
The chief election commissioner of Pakistan approved the date for presidential elections. According to the official schedule, the last day to submit presidential nomination papers will be July 24.
The submitted nomination papers will be scrutinized till July 26.
Presidential aspirant Prabowo Subianto topped the list on a survey of electable candidates released by the National Survey Institute (LSN) on Tuesday, beating out rivals Aburizal Bakrie, Megawati Sukarnoputri and Wiranto among others.
