Egypt court rejects election law, further poll delays expected

Egypt 's highest court ruled on Saturday that parts of a revised election law setting out terms for a parliamentary election were unconstitutional, casting fresh doubt over a poll that has already been delayed.

The Islamist-dominated upper house of parliament had approved the law last month and sent it to the Supreme Constitutional Court to check the legality of the voting procedures for a new lower house.

Opposition politicians had denounced the text of the revised election law approved by parliament and repeated threats to boycott the vote.

About 80 people have gathered in front of the building demanding denunciation of the agreement with the U.S. on Transit Center at Manas in the nearest future.

As leader of the People's Patriotic Movement Nurlan Motuev said if Almazbek Atambayev and the Parliament start bargaining on the Transit Center at Manas like Kurmanbek Bakiyev, they will hold a mass rally. "It is unacceptable that the Americans poison our air by their planes and coffins fall from the sky," he said.

Parties debate duration of Parliament term extension

Caretaker Minister of State Nicolas Fattoush presented Parliament with a draft law Wednesday to extend the legislature’s term, as rival parties negotiated the duration of the extension.

Fattoush requested that Parliament’s term be extended for two years, until June 20, 2015. According to Zahle MP Fattoush’s proposal, the extension of Parliament’s mandate is justified in order to avoid a political vacuum in the country, given that a caretaker government is currently managing state affairs.

TEHRAN (FNA)- Campaigning for the June 14 presidential election kicked off in Iran early this morning after the Guardian Council released the list of qualified candidates.

Under Iran's Election Law, the Guardian Council, the body responsible for vetting hopefuls, is required to announce the list of approved hopefuls within five days after the end of registration. This period can be extended for another five days if necessary.

Mashaei’s campaign office to ask Guardian Council to revise decision

The election campaign office of Esfandiyar Rahim-Mashaei, who was not approved by Iran’s Guardian Council to run in the upcoming presidential election, says it will pursue the matter through legal channels.

In a statement issued late on Tuesday, the campaign office said that it will use “the full legal capacity of the country" to appeal to the Guardian Council to revise and eliminate possible ambiguities in its decision, IRNA reported.

Wolesi Jirga passes electoral law

SANA’A, May 19 – The Supreme Committee of Elections and Referendum (SCER) said as far as they are concerned parliamentary  elections will go ahead in February 2014 as stipulated by the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) Initiative, the internationally brokered deal that handed power from former President Ali Abdullah Saleh to current President Abdu Rabu Mansour Hadi.  

Representatives from the SCER said the committee has been working overtime in order to meet the deadline.
