Parliamentary Defense and Security Committee finds 2012 government report unsatisfactory

Parliamentary Committee for Defense and Security found the government report for 2012 unsatisfactory in terms of training and ensuring defense of Kyrgyzstan.

Opinions on the issue have divided. In particular, the deputy chairwoman of the committee Irina Karamushkina offered to declare the work of the Cabinet satisfactory. But Ismail Isakov and Kurmantay Abdiyev disagreed.

However, the MPs noted that they put D not to the government of Zhantoro Satybaldiyev but to his predecessor - Omurbek Babanov, who headed the Cabinet since December 2011 till August 2012.

Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman has called for everyone, including opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim to accept the people's decision in the just-concluded general election and move forward for the good of the country.

In making the call, Musa, who is state Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman, urged the opposition to stop making allegations of fraud on the part of the BN -- merely designed to instigate the people.

Salam says not rushing Cabinet formation but opposes delays

Prime Minister-designate Tammam Salam said after talks with Speaker Nabih Berri Monday that he was not rushing to form the next Cabinet but at the same time was against delays in the formation process.

“I have said it right from the start that I am not in a hurry to form the Cabinet but I also do not like delays,” Salam told reporters at Berri’s Ain al-Tineh residence after the talks with the speaker.

His Majesty King Abdullah on Sunday called on deputies to upgrade the Lower House bylaws and codes as a prerequisite to having parliamentary governments.

His Majesty made his remarks at a meeting with Lower House members at the Royal Court, where he discussed Parliament’s duties, escalating campus violence as well as Jordan’s stand on Syria crisis developments and repercussions of the conflict on national security, according to a Royal Court statement.

Vetting of Iran’s presidential hopefuls underway: Guardian Council

Iran’s Guardian Council Spokesman Abbas Ali Kadkhodaei says the supervisory body has begun the vetting process of hopefuls for the upcoming presidential election.

Kadkhodaei made the comments on Sunday, adding that the council would try to finish vetting the hopefuls in five days’ time.

However, Kadkhodaei added, the supervisory body may need another five days to vet the hopefuls if it cannot finish the job during the initial five-day period.

The Coalition of Three brings together Velayati, former Majlis Speaker Gholam-Ali Haddad-Adel and Tehran Mayor Mohammad-Baqer Qalibaf.

Jalili, secretary of the Supreme National Security Council, and Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, chairman of the Expediency Council, signed up on the final day of the registration for the June 14 vote on Saturday.

The political parties taking part in the national dialogue initiated by the Presidency of the Republic agreed on Friday to keep the October 23, 2011, electoral system with some modifications.

"We agreed to maintain the rule of "the strongest will remain" applied during the elections of the National Constituent Assembly (NCA) with some improvements", Republican Party Secretary-General Maya Jribi told TAP news agency.

Mubarak’s retrial postponed

North Cairo Criminal Court Head Judge Mahmoud Kamel postponed the retrial of ousted President Hosni Mubarak, his two sons and his Minister of Interior Habib El-Adly until 8 June.

“The postponement gives civil rights lawyers the chance to coordinate on the case,” said Khalaf Bayoomi, a civil rights lawyer.

The prosecution and defence had appealed the court sentence issued in June 2012, which sentenced Mubarak and El-Adly to life sentences for failing to stop the deaths of protesters, and a retrial was set for Saturday.

Former Iranian President Hashemi Rafsanjani and Rahim-Mashaei signed up for the June vote in the final moments of registration day for Iran’s 11th presidential election.

Reformists rejected as city council candidates

Iranian media report that a large number of reformist candidates have been pronounced ineligible to run in the city council elections.

Mohsen Hashemi, Masoumeh Ebtekar and Parvin Ahmadinejad are among the many well known faces in Iranian politics who were disqualified, according to ILNA.

Mohsen Hashemi said he has not received an official disqualification letter from the Supervisory Committee.

A number of prominent figures, including Tehran Mayor Mohammad Baqer Qalibaf, who is a member of the Coalition of Three, and Vice-Speaker of Iran’s Majlis Mohammad Hassan Aboutorabi-Fard, registered on Saturday.
