Saudi Arabia: Women take step closer to municipal elections

Saudi women will be able to stand and vote in the municipal elections scheduled for next year, the Ministry of Municipal and Rural Affairs confirmed in a statement on Tuesday.

Saudi Minister of Municipal and Rural Affairs Prince Mansour Bin Miteb confirmed that “women have the right to contest the elections just like men, without facing any discrimination,” adding that Saudi women will also be issued campaign permits.

Recent reports claim that up to 22 women are expected to contest next year’s municipal council elections.

Front du Salut: Al Jomhouri n'est plus qu'un membre

Les membres du Front du Salut National réunis aujourd'hui, mercredi 19 février 2014, ont décidé que le parti Al Jomhouri a perdu sa place au sein du comité politique du Front et en devient un membre normal.

Rappelons qu'un différend a eu lieu entre le parti Al Jomhouri et certaines composantes du Front du Salut lorsque le parti a décidé de quitter l'Union Pour la Tunisie.

 

Four Presidential Candidates Take Part in Second TV Debate

Four Afghan presidential candidates participated in the second televised TOLOnews debate on Tuesday night, exchanging views on the country's security and domestic politics ahead of the April vote.

The candidates went head-to head into testy exchanges during the debate, which touched on security, corruption, women's rights.

The candidates answered questions for nearly two hours from moderator Mujahid Kakar.

PD, PPP lawmakers touted as Constitutional Court justices

Politicians are now competing to grab a seat at the Constitutional Court (MK) after the court last week controversially repealed a government regulation in lieu of law, or Perppu, barring politicians from becoming justices at the court. 

The court, which is tasked with adjudicating election disputes, will see two seats become vacant in the next few months: One was left empty by the exit of former chief justice Akil Mochtar, who was arrested on bribery charges last year. 

Justice Harjono, meanwhile, will leave office in March.

Un groupe de députés du bloc mouvement Ennahdha à l’ANC dépose au bureau d’ordre de l’Assemblée,  un projet de loi pour annuler le décret loi 103 de l’année 2011, se rapportant aux réserves quant à l’accord Sidaw.

Les députés considèrent considèrent que quelques  articles de cet accord représentent un danger pour le système familial tunisien et s’oppose aux valeurs de l’Islam.

 

Kalla to make decision after legislative poll

Former vice president Jusuf Kalla said that he would decide whether or not to run for president after the April 9 legislative election.

“Let us wait for the result of the legislative election. Let’s see which parties meet the presidential election threshold,” Kalla said as quoted by Antara news agency on Tuesday.

Kalla declined to comment on the prospect of being paired with Jakarta Governor Joko “Jokowi” Widodo.

“The most important thing now is to develop the nation and if one of the ways is by running for president than I would certainly do it,” Kalla said.

In anticipation of local government elections, much of the discourse in recent months has challenged the laws put forward by provincial governments under judiciary-induced deadlines, including lukewarm lobbying for the greater inclusion of women at the grass-roots level.

At a seminar hosted by Oxfam, in collaboration with several rights and women advocacy groups, party representatives expressed ambivalence over seats allotted to women in the Punjab, Sindh and Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa (K-P).

Sudan’s ruling NCP to distribute invitations for national dialogue

Sudan’s ruling National Congress Party (NCP) has announced it will extend a written invitation to all political parties to engage in a national dialogue to agree on a mechanism for implementing president Omer Hassan al-Bashir recent initiative.

The NCP political secretary, Mustafa Osman Ismail, said in the media forum organized by the National Union of Sudanese Youth (NYSY) that all-party dialogue reduces cost of war, pointing that Bashir’s call for national dialogue does not mean failure of previous initiatives for dialogue extended by other political forces.

Mouloud Hamrouche va se présenter à la présidentielle si l’armée ne présente pas un candidat, a-t-il affirmé, ce mardi 18 février, au journal arabophone El Khabar. « Je ne vais pas me présenter si l’armée présente un candidat », a-t-il indiqué.

En réponse à une question sur sa candidature en cas où le FLN présenterait son candidat, l’ancien chef du gouvernement affirme : « Ce n’est plus une condition ».

After a nine-hour meeting on the vexed Sejdic-Finci ruling ended without result, the EU Enlargement Commissioner blamed the impasse on Bosnian party leaders.

The EU Enlargement Commissioner, Stefan Fule, blamed leaders of Bosnia's seven main parties for the failure of yet another meeting on how to implement a 2009 Strasbourg court ruling.

The European Court of Human Rights has obliged Bosnia to change its constitution to enable ethnic minorities to run for top governing posts currently reserved to candidates of the three largest ethnic groups, Bosniaks, Serbs and Croats.

La députée istiqlalie, Khadija Ezzoumi vient d’être élue, lundi 17 février, membre de la commission exécutive de l’Union Interparlementaire islamique.

Lors du sommet des parlements des Etats de l’Organisation de la coopération islamique (OCI) qui se tient  cette semaine à Téhéran, l’ensemble des parlementaires ont élu Khadija Ezzoumi comme membre de la commission exécutive de l’union interparlementaire islamique. C’est la première fois qu’une femme accède à un tel poste au sein de cette organisation.

Pressing issues over Selangor's leadership crisis including the up coming crucial Kajang by-election will not be on the cards during Pakatan Rakyat's 5th National Convention this March 8.

Although pressing the Registrar of Society to have Pakatan formalised as a political entity before the gathering, PAS secretary-general Datuk Mustafa Ali said that the issue of Kajang was not part of the convention's agenda.
