The Election Supervisory Committee (Bawaslu) has said it will be flexible with the deadline for the General Elections Commission (KPU) to fix citizen registration problems still affecting around 3 million voters in the final list of 186 million voters.

As of Tuesday, the KPU and the Home Ministry had produced citizen registration numbers for around 7.1 million of 10.4 million voters who had lacked them. The KPU is scheduled to hold a plenary meeting on Wednesday, the deadline previously set by Bawaslu.

Indonesia’s Golkar party plans to establish a ruling coalition with other political parties modeled after Barisan Nasional if it wins the country’s elections next year, said its chairman Aburizal Bakrie.

Aburizal, who is the party’s presidential election candidate, said he had for many years been a “secret admirer” of Umno and Barisan as well as Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad, who had shown how a country like Malaysia could be brought forward under the framework of a political coalition.

The success of Barisan Nasional’s approach to politics in Malaysia’s plural society is rooted in its principle of moderation, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

He said the approach worked because the Barisan government listened to the people and tried to meet their rising expectations.

“We have liberalised our political system, getting rid of laws which allow detention without trial and we now allow university students to be involved in politics,” said Khairy at the Umno International Forum held ahead of the party’s general assembly on Tuesday.

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak said the transformation process in Umno should take into account the need for the party to move in tandem with the reality of new politics which now coloured the country’s political landscape.

Najib, who is also Umno president, said the party’s success thus far was not a guarantee for future success.

“To remain relevant, Umno has to be willing to carry out transformation that will reflect it as a party which is capable of assuring the future of the Malays and the country,” he said.

The Barisan Nasional component parties must resolve internal crises before implementing transformation to boost support of the people whom they represent, said Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak.

The Prime Minister said he was certain that all the Umno “friends” clearly understood that the fate of their parties depended on the extent of their capability to implement transformation.

“It is only with political will that we can come up with a party that is accepted by the public,” he said in an interview at his office in Parliament House yesterday.

Somalia's parliament has ousted Prime Minister Abdi Farah Shirdon in a vote of confidence. Politicians blame wrangling over corruption allegations and personal loyalties.

Abdi Farah Shirdon, prime minister of the Horn of Africa nation for just over a year, lost a confidence vote in parliament after he resisted President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud's demand that he resign. Legislators said Mohamud and Shirdon had differed over the composition of a new Cabinet, prompting Monday's no-confidence vote.
