ALGIERS- Voter turnout at the local elections has reached 44.26% for municipal assemblies and 42.92% for provincial assemblies at the closing of the polling stations nationwide, announced Thursday Minister of Interior and Local Authorities Daho Ould Kablia.

In 2007, the voter turnout reached 43.96% for APC and 43.26% for APW.

The province of Tindouf recorded the highest turnout with 72.82% for APC and 72.70% for APW, followed by the province of Adrar with 70.22% for APC and 69.47% for APW.

The lowest voter turnout was recorded in the province of Algiers 26.75% for APC and 25.63% for APW.

It exceeded 60% in two provinces and 50% in 12 provinces, said Ould Kablia.

The Interior Minister dubbed the results "satisfactory", adding that the voting operation was held in "calm and serenity" despite incidents reported in some polling stations, but that did not affect the smooth conduct of the polls.

The Interior Minister will hold a press conference Friday at 15:00 to announce the provisional results of the double election.
