Somali government arrests 2 senior al-Shabaab members

Somali security forces have apprehended two senior al-Shabaab members in Qoryooley, Deputy Minister of Internal Security Ibrahim Isaq Yarow announced Monday (March 31st).

"The two arrested men are senior officials. One of them was the mastermind of 2009 terrorist attack on Halane compound," Yarow said according to Hiiraan Online.

More than 20 people, including 17 African Union Mission in Somalia (AMISOM) troops, were killed in the Halane attack, Voice of America reported.

The second suspect is believed to be a trainer with al-Shabaab's elite Amniyat intelligence unit.

Officials displayed the two men to reporters, but did not reveal their names pending further investigations. The suspects were transferred to AMISOM custody at the Halane compound.

Also on Tuesday, the security forces arrested four men operating illegal checkpoints between Mogadishu and Afgoye, according to Benadir Regional Commanding Officer General Mohamed Yusuf Omar Madaale, Goobjoog News reported.


Security forces also seized two vehicles carrying explosive devices, several weapons including four AK-47s, and arrested a man accused of producing counterfeit Somali shillings.
