Somali President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Saturday (April 12th) cautioned against infusing tribalism into the country's nascent federalism system, Somalia's RBC Radio reported.

Mohamud made the warning during a speech honouring the 54th anniversary of Somali National Army (SNA).

Somalia's progress towards federalism has recently been complicated by competition between rival states forming their own regional administrations.

Mohamud praised the SNA for its work in fighting al-Shabaab, and for its recent territorial gains against the militant group, which he said were making way for government stabilisation initiatives in newly liberated areas.

He also thanked the United States for supporting the rebuilding of the Somali army.
