Mogadishu-Somalia security forces arrested at least 503 people in an operation in Mogadishu following several killings against government officials have been reported, officials said

Somalia’s security ministry spokesman, Mohamed Joseph Osman said that 303 people mainly teenage boys who have been links with Al Shabab militants and insecurity activities seized.

Mr. Joseph said that all detained people were taken into custody for further interrogations, adding that if any one of them found guilty will be put on the trial.

State authorities in Somalia must ensure swift, thorough and lawful investigations into a spate of recent attacks on journalists, and rescind a recent government order that undermines freedom of expression, said the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project in a statement released today.

Las fuerzas de seguridad somalíes están tratando de expulsar a las micilias islamistas de Al Shabaab de una de las grandes extensiones de territorio que todavía controla en el sur del país y desde donde lanzan varios ataques, ha informado el primer ministro somalí, Omar Sharmarke.   

"Hay un pasillo que han usado como trampolín durante los últimos años", ha remarcado Sharmarke en una entrevista. "Estamos intentando cerrarlo", ha agregado sin aportar ningún detalle más de la operación.

Abdikarim Hussein declares his candidacy for Central State of Somalia

His Excellency, Abdikarim Hussein Guleed has declared his candidate for central State of Somalia after a well organized ceremony has been held in Adado town of central Somalia’s Galgadud region.

The highly organized ceremony was attended by politicians, elders, intellectuals, youth and female civil society organizations hailed Mr Hussein’s declaration of his candidacy, adding that he could deal with the needs of people in central Somalia regions.

El ataque del grupo terrorista Al Shabab en la ciudad de Garowe (capital de la región semiautónoma de Puntland) este lunes ha causado la muerte de cuatro miembros de Unicef, cuyas nacionalidades aún no han sido reveladas, y de dos guardias de nacionalidad somalí, según fuentes de la organización. Otras cuatro han resultado gravemente heridas y han sido trasladadas en avión a Kenia para ser hospitalizadas.

Al menos 15 personas han muerto, entre ellas un soldado de la Unión Africana, en un ataque en Somalia. Militantes islamistas de la milicia somalí Al Shabab han hecho explotar un coche bomba en la entrada de la sede del Ministerio de Educación y luego irrumpieron el edificio, en Mogadiscio, según ha dicho un oficial de la Policía.

Entre las víctimas hay empleados del gobierno, miembros de las fuerzas de seguridad, civiles y tres atacantes, ha contado Mohamed Hassan, miembro del servicio de seguridad somalí, a DPA.

Govt shuts Shabelle radio and detains journalists

Somali security forces have raided, shut Shabelle radio and detained a large number of its staff tonight.
 
Forces have also detained customers and guests who happened to be the premises of the network during the raid.
The security forces are reported to be those of the Somali national intelligence and security gency and they have taken away some vital broadcast equipments.

Somalia: 10 muertos en doble atentado suicida

Las autoridades de Somalia anunciaron este viernes que al menos 10 personas murieron en un doble atentado suicida registrado en el hotel Central, en Mogadishu, capital del país.

Entre las víctimas se encuentran dos diputados y el vice alcalde mayor de la ciudad. En el atentado resultó herido el viceprimer ministro, Mohamed Omar Arte, quien fue trasladado de urgencia a un hospital. Otros altos funcionarios también resultaron heridos en el suceso.

Somali cabinet approves constitution review commission

The Somali cabinet on Thursday (May 29th) appointed a five-member committee for the Constitution Review and Implementation Commission, eight months after the government called for the establishment of the commission. 

Prime Minister Abdiweli Sheikh Ahmed, who chaired the cabinet meeting, welcomed the appointment of the committee members, who he said are all knowledgeable about the constitution.

Reconciliation conference opens in Gedo

A reconciliation conference opened in the Dolow district in Gedo region Monday (May 26th) with representatives from the Interim Jubba Administration (IJA), Ahlu Sunna wal Jamaa (ASWJ), the Somali federal government and lawmakers from the Gedo region in attendance, Somalia's Goobjoog News reported.

The conference is expected to lead to reconciliation between  IJA and ASWJ militias that clashed in Bulo Hawo two weeks ago, leaving at least 12 people.

Minister of National Security resigns

Somalia’s Minister of National Security has unexpectedly announced his resignation last night on national television, addressing the public on the state-run media network, Somali National TV.

Abdikarim Hussein Guled, the security minister for the Somali Federal Government tendered his resignation to the Prime Minister before officially declaring it to thousands of viewers.

MPs say PM and President must share responsibility

Several MPs have reported to Shabelle that the Prime Minister and President have to take responsibility for yesterday’s attack on parliament building in Mogadishu.

MP Abdisamad Maclin Mohamud said that the PM and President are required to take responsibility immediately. He said that until the situation has been solved, parliament will refuse to work and will go on strike.

Also, MP Abdilatif Sanyare said that the recent call for the president to resign by over 100 MPs, has now increased.

Al Shabaab warns government officials

Sheikh Ali Mohamud Rage, the spokesperson of the Al-Shabaab terrorist group reported to pro-Shabaab media outlets and said that they have weakened government agencies and have been successful in staging terror attacks at the supreme court, UNDP compound and parliament all in the last year.

The spokesperson said that the MPs and officials should disassociate with the government, as that is apparently the only option for them to survive.

Ali Dheere strained that the government institutions are places that officials will convene and that they will be targeted.

Somali parliament forms committee to finalise constitution, prepare for 2016 elections

The Somali parliament on Wednesday (May 21st) formed a sub-committee tasked with finalising the country's provisional constitution before it is voted on in a nationwide referendum and preparing electoral laws for the 2016 elections.

Lawmaker Abdi Ali Hassan was elected as the chair of the committee and Elmi Mohamed Nur as his deputy, Africa Review reported.

Hassan said he was confident his committee would succeed in fulfilling its duties. "The current parliament will have to be replaced in 2016 by one-man, one-vote elected legislators," he said.

Lawmakers oppose no-confidence motion against Somali president

A group of more than 100 members of the Somali parliament called for the withdrawal of a no-confidence motion against President Hassan Sheikh Mohamud on Monday (May 19th), Somalia's RBC Radio reported

The lawmakers held a press conference in Mogadishu to announce the end of their support for the motion.

"We have seen that such an impeachment motion would not serve the interests of the country during this hard time," said lawmaker Mohamed Omar Dalha. "I would call my fellow MPs who want the president to step down to bring their findings to the parliament not the media."

Interior Minister says he will modify national laws

The Minister of Interior & Federalism for the Somali Federal Government announced that the Ministry will undertake significant changes including the laws that the government has imposed.

Abdullahi Godax Barre, the Interior Minister strained that the reason for the laws to be changed are mainly because they are wrong, and will modify them before bringing it before Parliament to endorse the regulations.

Parliament to debate Interior Minister’s motion

Members of the Somali Parliament are expected to begin on the motion against the Minister of Interior & Federalism. A motion was recently brought forward by legislators and the Speaker of Parliament has decided that the MPs will be able to get their say today.

Lawmakers previously questioned the Minister of Interior & Federalism Abdullahi Godax Barre, and legislators claim that they disapproved of his answers and therefore set forth their motion against  him.
