ALGER - Le taux de participation national au scrutin de l'élection des membres des Assemblées populaires communales a atteint 35,97% et 34,39% pour l'élection des Assemblées populaires de wilaya (APW) à la clôture des urnes à 20h00, a annoncé samedi soir le président de l'Autorité nationale indépendante des élections (ANIE), Mohamed Charfi.

Son of former ruler among 25 of the 98 registered presidential candidates disqualified from running in the December 24 election.

Libya’s election commission has said Saif al-Islam Gaddafi, the son of former ruler Muammar Gaddafi, was ineligible to run in the country’s planned presidential election in December.

Gaddafi was one of 25 candidates disqualified by the commission on Wednesday, in an initial decision pending an appeals process that will ultimately be decided by the judiciary. Some 98 Libyans had registered as candidates.

Eastern military commander Khalifa Haftar will run in Libya’s presidential elections due next month, he announced in a televised speech.

“Elections are the only way out of the severe crisis that our country has plunged into,” said Haftar, who was expected to formally register later on Tuesday at the election centre in Benghazi.

Hundreds of supporters of Iraq’s powerful Hashd al-Shaabi – a pro-Iranian former paramilitary force – protested on Tuesday against “fraud” at recent parliamentary elections in which their movement performed poorly.

The Conquest (Fatah) Alliance, the political arm of the multiparty Hashd, won about 15 seats in the October 10 vote, according to preliminary results.

In the last parliament, it held 48 seats, making it the second-largest bloc.

Muqtada al-Sadr's coalition wins 73 seats in Iraqi parliament

BAGHDAD 

Iraq’s election commission has announced the full results of last weekend’s parliamentary elections, with Shia cleric Muqtada al-Sadr’s Sairoon Alliance dominating the polls.

The commission said al-Sadr’s party won 73 seats in the 329-member parliament, followed by Taqaddum (progress) bloc of Parliament Speaker Mohamed al-Halbousi with 37 seats.

Early voting has begun in Iraq’s parliamentary elections, with security forces, prisoners and internally displaced people casting their ballots two days ahead of Sunday’s general vote.

Iraqis are to elect a new parliament in the fifth such vote since a United States-led invasion in 2003 overthrew longtime leader Saddam Hussein.

A total of 329 seats are up for grabs in the election, which was moved forward from 2022 as a concession to youth-led pro-democracy protests that erupted in late 2019.

Imed al-Sayeh, head of country’s High National Election Commission, says Libya is ’80 or 90 percent ready’ for the presidential, parliamentary votes.

Preparations are almost done for polls in war-torn Libya, the head of the electoral commission says, despite wrangling over voting laws and warnings the outcome could be contested.

“We are 80 or 90 percent ready” for the presidential and parliamentary votes in December and January, Imed al-Sayeh, head of the country’s High National Election Commission (HNEC), said in an interview with the AFP news agency.

DOHA, Oct 3 (Reuters) - Qataris voted on Saturday in the Gulf Arab state's first legislative elections for two-thirds of the advisory Shura Council, a process that has stirred domestic debate about electoral inclusion and citizenship.

Turnout for the election of 30 members of the 45-seat body was 63.5%, the internal ministry said in a statement early on Sunday. The ruling emir will continue to appoint the remaining 15 Council members.

The burial ceremony of Algeria's longest-serving president, Abdelaziz Bouteflika, took place on Sunday amid mixed reactions to his death. 

Bouteflika passed away at the age of 84 on Friday. He had stepped down two years ago after his bid to run for a fifth presidential term sparked mass protests.
