70% of ballots already distributed: KPU

The General Elections Commission (KPU) has said that 70 percent of ballots for the legislative election, which will take place on April 9, have been distributed to regencies and cities across the country as of Monday.

KPU officer Susila Herry Prabowo explained that 80 percent of total ballot orders had been fulfilled, while the printing of ballots for 11 regions were still in progress.

“We hope to sort everything out today,” Herry was quoted as saying bytempo.co on Monday.

Herry said there had been printing delays as obstacles had been encountered.

The Somali government expressed concerns over the political situation in Baidoa, where two groups are competing to form a regional administration, with one party electing a new president Monday (March 3rd) for a new regional administration called Southwestern State of Somalia.

Two parallel conferences, with one advocating a regional state comprising three regions -- Bay, Bakol and Lower Shabelle -- and the other backing a region state comprising six regions -- Bay, Bakol, Lower Shabelle, Gedo, Lower Jubba and Middle Jubba -- have been meeting in Baidoa this week.

The Sudanese government has slammed demands by the rebel Sudan People’s Liberation Movement-North (SPLM-N) for negotiations on a new humanitarian deal to cease hostilities and deliver food to affected civilians in South Kordofan and Blue Nile state.

In a response to a draft framework agreement proposed by the African Union mediation, the SPLM-N called for direct talks on a cessation of hostilities and the modalities of aid delivery on the basis of international humanitarian law.

For the first time, the House of Representatives Commission III overseeing legal affairs and laws is using an independent team of experts to help screen Constitutional Court (MK) justice candidates, exposing, in the process, the hopefuls’ lack of even basic legal knowledge.

Unlike previous “fit-and-proper” tests for judges and other state officials at Commission III, where lawmakers usually throw softball questions to candidates, the eight invited experts have been asking decidedly more difficult questions.

The Sudanese presidency has said the mechanism for holding national dialogue, which was called for by president Omer Hassan Al-Bashir, will be announced within two weeks.

Late January, Bashir delivered a speech in which he announced a four-point plan for reform "to stop the war and bring peace, free political society, fight against poverty and revitalise national identity", calling for political forces to engage in dialogue to agree on the implementation items though he did not specify practical steps to do so.

Lakes state military caretaker Governor Maj-Gen Matur Chut Dhuol has sworn in his newly appointed ministers on Tuesday despite the senior figures from the ruling party - Sudan people’s Liberation Movement (SPLM) - boycotting the ceremony.

The swearing in ceremony was organised by the Lakes State government secretariat general office without the normal procedure of notifying the SPLM office in Rumbek in regard to swearing in of the newly appointed ministers.

The 15th Summit of Iran’s Assembly of Experts has kicked off in the capital, Tehran, with the country’s senior officials in attendance.

The two-day event opened in Tehran on Tuesday with a speech by Chairman of the Iranian Assembly of Experts Ayatollah Mohammad-Reza Mahdavi Kani.

Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani and Chairman of the Expediency Council Akbar Hashemi Rafsanjani, both members of the Assembly, are among the participants of the meeting.
