Egypt's rival political squares hosted annual prayers for Eid Al-Fitr — the holiday that follows the holy fasting month of Ramadan — early Thursday, followed by ongoing celebrations.

 

In response to calls by Egypt's anti-Morsi Rebel campaign, and several aligned political forces, thousands gathered to attend prayers at the iconic Tahrir Square, followed by pro-military chants.

Both police and military forces were deployed to secure the square.

KUWAIT: Newly-nominated National Assembly Speaker Marzouq Al-Ghanim said he would be working on “opening a new page” with the government and putting past wounds behind them. Al-Ghanim was voted speaker in the parliament’s first session yesterday by a huge majority of 36 votes, ahead of rivals ex-speaker in the void parliament Ali Al-Rashed (18 votes), Roudhan Al-Roudhan (eight votes) and Ali Al-Omair (0 votes).

The process that started with the Ergenekon investigation will also have political impacts, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's chief political adviser, Yalçın Akdoğan, said Aug. 7, explaining his previous tweets stating that the trial was "the biggest settling of accounts in Turkish history."

"The [Ergenekon trial verdict] is important politically as well because our political [evolution] requires political cleanings," Akdoğan said in remarks to private broadcaster Kanal 24.

KOTA KINABALU, Aug 6 (Bernama) -- Foreign Minister Datuk Seri Anifah Aman today clarified that "everyone in Umno has the right to contest in the upcoming party elections".

Anifah was quoted as saying yesterday that he was optimistic that Sabah Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman would receive strong backing from Sabah Umno should he decide to run for one of the three posts of Umno vice-president in the party elections in October.

Tunisia's embattled Constituent Assembly has been suspended indefinitely, ahead of planned mass protests calling for the body to be dissolved, its speaker said.

The latest twist came on Tuesday as hundreds of demonstrators started to gather outside the assembly building for a mass rally called by the opposition aimed at pressuring the government to step down.

The head of the Constituent Assembly and Secretary General of the centre-left party Ettakatol Mustafa Ben Jaffar announced to the nation on Tuesday that the constituent assembly or parliament would be suspended.

The Central Election Commission of Kyrgyzstan has made changes in reserves of 4 Precinct Election Commissions. The decision was made today at a session.

According to the Head of CEC Organizing Department Bolot Maksutbayev, the commission changed the reserves of Aravan, Alay Precinct Election Commissions of Osh province, Karakol PEC of Issyk-Kul province and Talas PEC of Talas province. At least 14 people were relieved of their duties at their own request.

While the Parliamentary Constitution Conciliation Commission introduced constitutional assurances against domestic violence, it also concluded the article about political party memberships. 

In its Friday meeting, the Parliamentary Constitution Conciliation Commission introduced a constitutional guarantee against domestic violence under the article “The right to marry and form a family.” The clause “The state protects children and women against domestic violence and prevents girls from being married at an early age and by force” was added to the article. 

Deputies discuss three of 164 articles in Rules of Procedure

AMMAN — Deputies on Sunday could not discuss more than three articles out of 164 of the Lower House Rules of Procedure, increasing fears that they will not be able to conclude discussions over the regulations before the end of the week.

Only two meetings are left before the current non-ordinary Parliament session concludes, making it unlikely that MPs will be able to endorse the amended rules this week, parliamentary sources said following their meeting on Sunday.

Senior Democratic Party politicians said that the party's presidential primary would have never been held if former chairman Anas Urbaningrum was not charged with corruption.

According to Melanie Leimena Suharly, deputy chairman of Democratic Party supervisory body, the party was set to nominate Anas to run in the 2014 presidential election.

“He [Anas] fits all the requirements for the nomination. But everything changed following the graft allegations against him,” Melanie told reporters at the House of Representatives on Friday.

AMMAN — A leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood said on Thursday that he will run in the upcoming municipal elections despite the group’s decision to boycott the August 27 polls.

Speaking to The Jordan Times in a phone interview on Thursday, Nabil Kofahi said he was nominated by 400 figures from Irbid Governorate, some 80km north of Amman, to run for the city’s mayoral race.

“They have chosen me and I could not say no,” he added.
