A delegation from Taksim Solidarity has been received by PM Erdoğan last night in Ankara. The government spokesperson Hüseyin Çelik made a declaration after the meeting, saying that they will wait for court’s final decision on the future of Gezi Park and go on a plebiscite no matter the outcome of the ongoing prosecution. He also pledged that the government will make necessary investigations on police violence and take necessary measures.

Preliminary List of Candidates for 2014 Legislative Elections Released

The General Elections Commission (KPU) released on Thursday a preliminary list of candidates running for office in the 2014 legislative elections, commissioner Ferry Kurnia Rizkiansyah said.

“It will be published on the KPU official Web site at www.kpu.go.id on [Thursday],” Ferry said.

The online list will include more data on the candidates — an improvement on previous lists — including photos, addresses, constituency and other data in order to better inform the public.

Lack of quorum legitimizes Parliament extension

The lengthening of Parliament’s mandate goes into effect next week because the Constitutional Council will be unable to meet for lack of a quorum to act on petitions challenging the extension, a key council member said Wednesday.

He accused Speaker Nabih Berri, Hezbollah chief Sayyed Hasan Nasrallah and Progressive Socialist Party leader Walid Jumblatt of obstructing the council’s work by preventing the quorum needed to decide on petitions challenging the extension of Parliament’s four-year mandate, which expires on June 20.

Karzai, jihadi leaders discuss peace bid, BSA

President Hamid Karzai on Wednesday held a consultative meeting with jihadi leaders and political figures, his office said.

Recent developments in the Afghan-led peace process came up for discussion at the meeting, chaired by President Karzai.

A statement from the Presidential Palace said the Bilateral Security Agreement (BSA) between Afghanistan and the United States was also dicussed.

Other issues facing the country were also taken up by the participants, whose names were not given.

Two Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidates Wednesday filed last minute election petitions seeking to declare the 13th General Election results for the Pasir Gudang and Tebrau parliamentary seats as null and void.

Dr Ahmad Faidhi Saidi and Choong Shiau Yoon filed their petition about 9.30 am at the High Court here.

Barisan Nasional (BN) candidates Normala Abdul Samad and Khoo Soo Seang won the Pasir Gudang and Tebrau seats respectively.

In IPOH, PKR's K.Vasantha Kumar, 40, filed a petition against the Tapah parliamentary seat result at the High Court.

Main opposition leader makes midnight call to president over Gezi Park protests

The main opposition party is planning to turn the Gezi Park protests and the government’s anti-democratic stance regarding peaceful demonstrators into an international issue with vows to take police brutality to the European human rights court. 

The Republican People’s Party (CHP) is examining the legality of such a move, its spokesperson Haluk Koç told reporters during the social democrat party’s Central Decision-Making Council meeting June 12. It was the second MYK meeting June 12 following the first one, which took place in an extraordinary session at 1:30 a.m.

Mohammad Reza Aref has withdrawn his candidacy from Iran’s June 14 presidential election in order to give the reformist camp a better chance to win. The former vice president announced his decision to drop out of the election in a statement issued late on Monday, in which he said the decision was made after he received suggestions from former Iranian President Mohammad Khatami, who advised to stand aside.

The Constitutional Council will issue a final decision Wednesday on petitions contesting the extension of Parliament’s term amid controversial reports over whether the body is going to endorse or dismiss challenges put forth. The head of the Constitutional Council Judge Issam Suleiman presented Monday his report on the challenge to the 10-member body, a judicial source told The Daily Star. The half-Muslim, half-Christian council will issue a pronouncement on Suleiman’s report Wednesday.

The Parti Sosialis Malaysia’s (PSM) application to join the opposition coalition, Pakatan Rakyat, should be considered favourably, said DAP chairman Karpal Singh. 

He said as far as possible there should be a two-party system in the country and that could be achieved by PSM joining the Pakatan Rakyat.

“For Sungai Siput MP Dr Michael Jeyakumar to contest under the PKR ticket (in the recent general election) really showed that PSM regards PKR as its ally,” he told a press conference here today.
