Falling short of an apology, President Francois Hollande has acknowledged France's colonisation of Algeria was "brutal and unfair".

"For 132 years, Algeria was subjected to a brutal and unfair system: colonisation. I acknowledge the suffering it caused," Hollande told the Algerian parliament on Thursday on the second and final day of a landmark visit to the North African country.

Selon d’autres indications, ces scrutins, qui souffrent déjà d’un retard de plus d’un an par rapport à leur délai constitutionnel, ne pourront pas avoir lieu en 2013. Certains analystes tablent pour des élections générales en 2014.

Morsy to receive nominees for Shura Council on Friday

The National Dialogue Committee (NDC) has completed its final list of nominations for the Shura Council and plans to present it to President Mohamed Morsy on Friday.

The NDC was formed by the president in an attempt to appease political forces who oppose the draft constitution, and to bridge differences across the parties in the future of the political process.

Leftists and pan-Arab parties agreed to run for the January 23 parliamentary elections under one national list, a leftist leader said on Wednesday. 

“We will form the necessary coalitions with candidates at the national level, particularly those who adopt programmes similar to ours, but we will not have our own candidates to run in the local districts,” Abla Abu Olbeh, secretary general of the Jordanian Democratic People’s Party (Hashed), said.

Egypt's new public prosecutor, appointed by President Mohamed Morsi last month, has resigned from his post, judicial sources and the main state newspaper al-Ahram reports.

The resignation of Public Prosecutor Talaat Ibrahim Abdallah on Monday follows a furore among members of the judiciary who said Morsi's decision in November to sack the former public prosecutor and appoint Abdallah was an assault on the independence of the judiciary.

Angry protesters have hurled rocks at the Tunisian president and parliamentary speaker in Sidi Bouzid, the cradle of the revolution that erupted in the north African country two years ago.

The incident began after a speech by President Moncef Marzouki in the central Tunisian town, where celebrations are taking place on Monday to mark the anniversary of the revolution.

Mustapha Ben Jaafar, the parliamentary speaker, was about to address the crowd when the violence began.

Le retour du président après sa convalescence suscite moins de commentaires sur un état de santé visiblement au top que sur ce qui va se passer dans quelques jours.

Les regards sont tournés vers la présidence où une forte présomption de remaniement du gouvernement en cette fin d’année alimente les rumeurs. L’absence de l’homme fort a, quoi qu’on dise, changé d’une façon ou d’une autre le climat de confiance entre le Rais et certains de ses hommes. Yousry Hammad, official spokesman of the Salafist El-Nour Party, accused Sunday via his Facebook page the media and dissolved National Democratic Party of using all means to stop the forward momentum of Egypt.

Hundreds of Islamist protesters gathered outside the High Constitutional Court (HCC) have prevented the head of the court, Judge Maher El-Beheiry, from entering the premises Sunday afternoon.

El-Beheiry contacted the police to report the incident but was still unable to enter the court.

Voting has ended in the first round of the constitutional referendum in Egypt, with initial results indicating that supporters of the draft document have a narrow lead heading into the second round.

The early result of the poll is based on unofficial tallies that emerged on Sunday. Complete results are not due to be released until the second round of voting on December 22 in the remaining 17 provinces.
