El ministro de Relaciones Exteriores de Siria, Walid Mouallem, falleció este lunes a los 79 años de edad, tras haber sido uno de los pilares del gobierno de Bashar Al Asad y haber conservado su ministerio durante toda la guerra.
 
Sancionado por Estados Unidos desde el inicio del conflicto en 2011, Walid Mouallem apoyó indefectiblemente al presidente sirio Bashar Al Asad y era conocido por sus críticas sarcásticas y virulentas contra los países occidentales en el momento de defender las posiciones de su país.
 

Second phase of Egypt’s parliamentary elections sees 29.5% voter turnout

Head of the National Elections Authority (NEA) Lasheen Ibrahim announced, on Monday, that the second phase of the House of Representatives elections has witnessed 29.5% voter turnout.

 

The electoral list led by pro-government Mostaqbal Watan Party has won the majority of votes in the second phase.

Snowfall, power outages hinder polling process in hotly contested GB election

The people of Gilgit-Baltistan are heading to polling stations today (Sunday) to vote in what could be the most hotly contested election the region has ever seen.

Pictures and videos showed citizens lined up outside polling stations, wearing face masks and observing social distancing to curb the spread of the coronavirus. Many also braved heavy snowfall in the upper areas of GB to cast their vote.

There were also power outages reported at some polling stations, slowing down the voting process as staff used torches to register voter data.

The House of Representatives, the High Council of State, and the Constituent Drafting Body have reiterated that the draft constitution is now in the hands of the Libyan people, who have the sole right to accept or reject it through a public referendum.

In a joint statement, the three blocks demanded the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL) to adhere to its mission by supporting the constitutional process and help clear the way for holding the constitutional referendum, which would lead to a permanent constitutional stage.

The Acting Head of the UN mission in Libya (UNSMIL), Stephanie Williams said on Friday that the participants of the Libyan Political Dialogue Forum (LPDF), which is being held in Tunisia, have agreed to hold constitutionally-based elections on 24 December 2021.

“December 24 is Libyan Independence Day, a very important day for Libyans but it will also be a critical day in the history of Libya”, Williams said in a press conference, adding that “it will be a time, on which the Libyans can democratically elect their leaders and renew the legitimacy of their institutions.”

Jordan ended voting on Tuesday in elections that were set to keep parliament in the hands of tribal and pro-government factions and have been criticised by the Islamist and liberal opposition for failing to reflect their true level of support.

Officials said turnout among the 4.64 million eligible to vote was 29.88%, the lowest participation rate in many years. The poll coincides with deep public discontent as Jordan grapples with an economic crisis, and unemployment and poverty aggravated by a surge in the COVID-19 pandemic.

President of Zamalek Club and candidate in Egypt’s parliamentary elections Mortada Mansour filed on Tuesday an appeal against the results of the first round of elections wherein he failed to secure enough votes to proceed to the next round. Runoff elections for the contested Mit Ghamr district will take place between the four highest-ranked candidates. Mansour came in sixth place.

Morocco’s 2021 general elections are set to take place in September, Le360 reported today, citing “concordant sources.”

According to the same source, next  year’s elections will include three votes — municipal, regional, and legislative elections — on the same day.

Municipal and regional elections decide which political parties will lead local and regional councils. Meanwhile, the legislative election determines the number of seats each party earns at Morocco’s House of Representatives.

Special committees to audit final election results

The Independent Election Commission will for the first time form special committees to calculate and audit the final results of the parliamentary elections in the three regions of the Kingdom.

Commission spokesman Jihad Momani told Petra in an interview that the committees' formation aims to tabulate and audit the votes in their final form in the constituencies in the three regions, and not to leave it to the Amman central committee to do so, with the aim of speeding up the announcement of results.

The Sudanese Communist Party (SCP) announced its withdrawal from the ruling Forces for Freedom and Change, accusing its leadership of plotting against the revolution. Total number of registered candidates now stands at 1,674, including 360 women. 

The Independent Election Commission (IEC) on Wednesday said it had found over 700 violations committed by parliamentary candidates. Jordanians will head to polling stations on November 10 to elect members of the 19th Parliament. "Since the announcement of the elections, the IEC has dealt with 710 violations, including 100 incidents related to financial irregularities, or what is termed as 'black money'," IEC Spokesperson Jihad Momani told The Jordan Times.

Voting in the second stage of parliamentary elections kicked off this week with the Mostaqbal Watan Party expected to once again sweep the polls. An estimated 31 million voters in 13 governorates will head to the polls next Saturday and Sunday (7-8 November) to cast their ballots in the second stage of parliamentary elections. Egyptian expats in 124 countries began voting on Wednesday and Thursday (4-5 November).
