L’association Al Adl Wal Ihsane (Justice et spiritualité) a annoncé aujourd’hui lors d’une conférence de presse tenue à Salé que Mohamed Abbadi, autrefois numéro 2 du défunt Abdessalam Yassine, a été élu « secrétaire général » lors d’une réunion extraordinaire du Conseil de la Choura, l’organe suprême de ce mouvement islamiste, les 21, 23 et 23 décembre à Salé.

The President of the Bosniak-Croat entity has refused to dismiss ministers who belong to parties that are not the part of the new parliamentary majority.

President Budimir rejected Niksic's demand to dismiss eight of the 16 ministers from the government until their cases are resolved by the relevant courts.

“As a President of the Federation I don't want to interfere in decisions of the judiciary which... refer to open questions over disputes in the functioning of the government,” Budimir said.

Le Sénat a adopté, au cours d'une séance plénière tenue, dimanche à Nouakchott, sous la présidence de son vice-président, M. Seydna Ali Ould Mohamed Khouna, deux projets de loi dont le premier porte sur la répression des crimes de coup d'Etat et autres formes de changements anticonstitutionnels du pouvoir, en tant que crimes contre la sûreté de l'Etat et le second sur la répression des crimes d'esclavage et de la torture en tant que crimes contre l'humanité.

UN envoy Brahimi arrives in Damascus

International peace envoy tasked with ending Syria’s conflict has arrived in Syria and is set to meet with President Bashar al-Assad.

Lakhdar Brahimi is hoping to "achieve a breakthrough", to broker a solution that would lead to a consensus transitional government with full authority, diplomatic sources told Al Jazeera on Sunday.

Brahimi's trip is his third to Damascus since taking his post in August.

The poll on Saturday is a sign of modest reform in response to protests inspired by the Arab Spring.

The small Gulf oil producer, ruled since 1970 by Sultan Qaboos, sits opposite Iran on the Strait of Hormuz, the conduit for nearly a fifth of globally traded petroleum.

Egypt's vice president resigns amid polls

Egypt's vice president has announced his resignation on the day of a referendum on a new constitution, state TV reported.

Mahmoud Mekki's resignation on Saturday was announced just hours before the end of voting in the second and final round of a referendum on a disputed Muslim Brotherhood-backed constitution.

Mekki, a career judge, has said he intends to quit once the charter is adopted.

The new constitution eliminates the post of vice president.

The No to Military Trials Campaign accuses Egypt's presidency of "lying" regarding the status of the military trials of civilians, in response to a statement released by Egypt's presidential assistant on foreign relations, Essam Haddad.

While Haddad's statement claims that the new constitution marks Egypt's progress towards universal Human Rights standards, including prohibiting the trying of civilians in military courts, the rights campaign condemned such a statement as completely false.

Egypt’s political opposition boycotted a debate on the draft constitution on Friday, one day before the second phase of the national charter’s referendum. The session, however, was held as planned.

The debate, designed to give opposition the chance to voice their reservations over the draft constitution, was held at the headquarters of the upper house of parliament (Shura Council).

Contrairement aux informations distillées il y a quelques jours par des sources de presse selon lesquelles la Commission électorale nationale indépendante (CENI) va fixer dans les 48 heures, une date pour la tenue d’élections législatives et municipales, les faits semblent prouver le contraire.

Selon d’autres indications, ces scrutins, qui souffrent déjà d’un retard de plus d’un an par rapport à leur délai constitutionnel, ne pourront pas avoir lieu en 2013. Certains analystes tablent pour des élections générales en 2014.

Morsy to receive nominees for Shura Council on Friday

The National Dialogue Committee (NDC) has completed its final list of nominations for the Shura Council and plans to present it to President Mohamed Morsy on Friday.

The NDC was formed by the president in an attempt to appease political forces who oppose the draft constitution, and to bridge differences across the parties in the future of the political process.
