The Peoples' Democratic Party (HDP) will hold its ordinary congress on Jan. 17, 2016, when delegates will vote for a single list of party administrators in which present Co-chairs Selahattin Demirtaş and Figen Yüksekdağ will be the only candidates for chairpersons of the party, a daily reported on Tuesday.

According to a story in Milliyet, Demirtaş and Yüksekdağ will continue to serve as co-chairs despite a loss of nearly 1 million votes in the Nov. 1 snap election.

Prior to the ordinary congress on Jan. 17, 2016, the HDP will organize local conferences of its heads of local branches and opinion leaders. Suggestions from the local branches will be presented to the HDP administration at a wide-scale conference in Ankara on Dec. 26-27.

According to Milliyet, during the conferences the HDP will discuss the future of the Kurdish settlement process, which was launched by the Justice and Development Party (AK Party) government, headed by the then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, and Abdullah Öcalan, jailed leader of Kurdistan Workers' Party (PKK).

The HDP administration will also discuss political developments in the Middle East, especially Iraq and Syria, where a large population of Kurds live. The decisions will be presented to the HDP congress in January.

Milliyet also reported that after objections from a large number of its members, the HDP administration loosened its bylaw which only permits its co-chairs to serve for two terms. Having served two terms already, Demirtaş and Yüksekdağ were not expected to be candidates at the third ordinary congress of the party.
