230,000 Delegates To Determine Leadership Of UMNO Wings Saturday

About 230,000 delegates from the three UMNO wings - Wanita, Youth and Puteri - will choose their leadership at the divisional and national levels when the delegates' meeting and election of the respective wings are held simultaneously at 191 divisions Saturday.

The meetings-cum-elections will definitely be keenly watched by party members and political observers as for the first time, it will involve a large number of party grassroots members who are given the right to chooose who to lead them for the next three years.

Umno polls: 334 bankrupt candidates barred from division contest

A total of 334 candidates vying for various positions at Umno division elections have been disqualified due to bankruptcy.

Umno election commitee chief Tan Sri Tajol Rosli Ghazali said 495 candidates for the same election had withdrawn while 39 were not allowed to contest due to disciplinary issues.

He said these people had been barred from contesting as they had sabotaged the party during the 13th general election.

PAS allows candidates to openly campaign

PETALING JAYA: For the first time since its inception more than 60 years ago, PAS is allowing candidates vying for positions in the party to campaign openly.

Party election committee chairman Asmuni Awi said candidates could promote themselves but not attack their opponents.

“We forbid statements, videos, caricatures and use of various other mediums and tools to belittle or slander other candidates.

“Those resorting to personal attacks risk disciplinary action,” he said.

MCA Deputy President Datuk Seri Liow Tiong Lai on Tuesday denied allegations by 20 MCA Central Committee (CC) members that the MCA failed miserably in the 13th general election (GE13) because he failed to carry out his responsibilities as the chairman of MCA's GE13 committee.

Liow also refuted claims from the group that he had refused to withdraw the membership of Pulai Sebatang state assemblyman Datuk Tee Siew Keong who was offered a post of exco in Johor, resulting in an internal conflict in the party.

DATUK Seri Najib Tun Razak is reaching out to the Chinese community for common ground to build a more progressive nation although the community overwhelmingly rejected the Government in the 13th general election.

The Prime Minister said he hoped the Chinese would support the Government and realise that the future of Malaysia could only be a success if they forged a closer working relationship with the Malay-bumiputra community, who formed 67% of the country’s population.

KUALA LUMPUR: The process of submitting the nomination papers for the 2013 Umno election nationwide was running smoothly as of 10am Saturday.

The process took place at most of the respective state Umno offices except for the Langkawi division which was given an exemption to carry out the process at their own place due to logistical problems. 

In SABAH, the supporters and representatives turned up as early as 8am at the state Umno headquarters to submit their nomination forms.

PETALING JAYA: When the Kuala Besut by-election was held in July within weeks of GE13, it confirmed what many media observers suspected ... the Malaysian public is down with election fatigue.

PETALING JAYA: The political temperature is set to rise as the 100-day countdown begins for four major political parties ending the year with heated elections.

Umno and MCA, the Barisan Nasional’s two largest component parties are set to hold their party elections on Oct 19 and Dec 21 respectively.

For the Opposition, the DAP will be conducting its election for office bearers on Sept 29 while PAS will elect its office bearers on Nov 22.

Najib, who is also Umno president, said this was because the election will be carried out based on the new party constitution.

A by-election is being held in Kuala Besut, on the country’s northern coast, following the death of a Terengganu state assemblyman. BESUT, July 22 (Bernama) -- The 55 per cent of young voters among the 17,683 electorate in Kuala Besut are expected to determine the victory of the Barisan Nasional (BN) in the state by-election on Wednesday, said Umno Youth chief Khairy Jamaluddin.

"We have done our best to convince the young voters. The approach is most suitable to our strategy of having fielded a young candidate. The young voters are dependent on him to be their voice," he told reporters after a walkabout at the Kuala Besut farmers' market.
